怯懼（上羌劫反顧野王曰怯畏劣也方言怯去也說文作㹤杜林云怯字從心作怯亦作袪同下劬遇反考聲懼憂也畏也說文懼恐也從心瞿聲也古文作愳也）。

怯懼 [Cowardly and fearful] (The first character is qiang + jie fan. Gu Yewang says: '怯 means timid and weak.' The Fangyan says: '怯 means to shrink away.' The Shuowen writes it as 㹤. Du Lin says: 'The character 怯 is written with 心 [heart] as 怯; it is also written as 袪, which is identical.' The second character is qu + yu fan. The Kaosheng says: '懼 means anxiety; fear.' The Shuowen says: '懼 means dread.' It is from 心 [heart] with 瞿 as phonetic. In ancient script it was written as 愳).
