灰燼（上呼隈反說文云死火也從火又聲也下席胤反俗字也正體作燼杜注左傳云火之餘木也說文火餘從火聿聲也）。

灰燼 [Ashes and embers] (The first character is hu + wei fan. The Shuowen says: 'Extinguished fire.' It is from 火 [fire] with 又 as phonetic. The second character is xi + yin fan; it is a vulgar character. The orthodox form is 燼. Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'The leftover wood from a fire.' The Shuowen says: 'Remnants of fire.' It is from 火 [fire] with 聿 as phonetic).
