先折（上星延反說文前進也從古㞢字從人下章熱反考聲折挫也拗取也說文正體從重二屮丑列反從斤作折解云二屮草也以斤斷草曰折小篆因以二屮相連便誤為古[屮/(艸-屮)]字遂從手作折也出音手也）。

Previously broken (先折: the first character is pronounced 星 + 延 fanqie; Shuowen says: to advance forward; it is derived from the ancient character 㞢 and from 人; the second character is pronounced 章 + 熱 fanqie; Kaosheng says: 折 means to break down, to snap off; Shuowen says: the standard form is derived from double 屮 (pronounced 丑 + 列 fanqie) and 斤, explaining that double 屮 means grass, and cutting grass with an axe (斤) is called 折; Small Seal script joined the two 屮 characters, mistakenly turning them into the ancient [屮/(艸-屮)], and thus took shou [手] to form 折, pronounced with the sound of 手).
