Sent to spy (使覘: the second character has the fanqie 諂瀲 [chān]; Du Yu's commentary on the Zuo Zhuan says: 'Chān is like to observe secretly.' Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Book of Rites says: 'To peep and look.' The Kaosheng says: 'To watch and observe.' The Shuowen jiezi says it takes 'see' [見] as radical and has zhān [占] as phonetic; liàn is pronounced like lián in liánjiǎn).
