溟渤 (the first character is *m[ì]-píng* fanqie; the second character is *p[én]-mò* fanqie. Note that the *Zhuangzi* says: “In the northern ocean there is a fish called Kūn (鯤, *g[ǔ]-hún* fanqie)... when the ocean moves, it will journey to the southern ocean.” *Míng* and *Bó* are both names of northern and southern oceans. The *Gujin zhengzi* says it is composed of ‘wood’ (木) with *míng* (冥) as phonetic. As for *bó* (渤), the *Book of Han Sounds and Meanings* says: “*Bóxiè* (渤澥) is another name for the sea.” The *Wenxuan* says: “Dug out ponds resembling the Minbo,” which is this. The *Gujin zhengzi* says: “*Bó* is also the ocean. It is composed of ‘water’ (水) with *bó* (勃) as phonetic”).
