Craggy and precipitous (巉巖: the first character is pronounced *cha* + *yan* [chán]; the second is pronounced *ya* + *xian* [yán]. The *Elegies of Chu* says: 'In the mountain ravines the waters crash precipitously, rising in waves.' Wang Yi's commentary says: '巉巖 describes mountain torrents being rugged and obstructed.' The *Guangya* says: '巉巖 describes a lofty and steep appearance.' The *Gujin zhengzi* states that both characters are formed from the "mountain" radical (山) with [毚-、] and 嚴 as their phonetics. 崎 is pronounced *qi* [qī]; 嶇 is pronounced *qu* [qū]; 毚 is pronounced *tu* + *xian* [chán]).
