Vermilion steps (丹墀: zhì + jī [chí]; Hanshu: "The scholar ascends the steps patterned on the right, treading the coating of red steps." Shuowen: "A painted floor; in ritual, the Son of Heaven has red steps; derived from 土 [earth] with 犀 as phonetic; red means vermilion.").
