羶腥(上設延反杜子春注周禮云羶羊脂也說文作羴云羊臭也從三羊今作羶通用字也傳從月作膻俗字也下皆丁反小疋云腥生肉氣也說文從月從星星亦聲也)。

羶腥 (Mutton-stench and fishy smell: the upper character is [shān], [fanqie] 設延. Du Zichun's commentary on the Rites of Zhou states: "Shān means sheep fat." The Shuowen jiezi writes it as 羴, saying it means the smell of sheep, composed of three sheep; currently written as 羶, which is standard; in transmissions it is written with the flesh radical as 膻, a popular variant. The lower character is [xīng], [fanqie] 皆丁; the Xiaoya states: "Xīng means the smell of raw meat." The Shuowen jiezi says it is composed of the flesh radical and the star radical, with star also phonetic).
