篆籀 (The first character is *chu* + *yan* [fanqie]. Grand Scribe Shizhou of King Xuan of Zhou composed fifteen chapters of the Greater Seal script; Chancellor Li Si composed the *Cangjie pian*, Director of Carriage Affairs Zhao Gao composed the *Yuanli pian*, and Grand Scribe Humu Jing composed the *Boxue pian*, all drawing upon Grand Scribe Shizhou's Greater Seal, occasionally abbreviating and altering it, which constitutes the so-called Lesser Seal script. The *Shuowen* [says]: "To lead or draw forth writing; composed of the bamboo radical with 彖 as the phonetic." 彖 is *tuan* + *luan* [fanqie]. The second character is *chou* + *liu* [fanqie]. The *Shiji* says: "籀 refers to the script taught to the sons of state and school children by the scribal officials during the Zhou; it has different forms from the ancient script found in the wall of Master Kong's residence, but both are ancient scripts." The *Shuowen* [says]: "To read and chant writings; composed of the bamboo radical with 榴 as the phonetic.")
