桑梓 (The first character has the fanqie 索郎. The name of a tree, that is, the silkworm mulberry. The Yinghua ji says: “Of people's livelihoods, there are only farming and sericulture. The emperor personally plows the sacred field, and the empress personally tends mulberries to set an example for the ten thousand people.” In ancient script it is written as 𣕐 with three 屮 above and 木 below; the small seal script altered the three 屮 into 桑, pronounced 弱; in clerical script, popular usage writes it with 卉 as 桒, which is a gradual corruption. The second character has the fanqie 茲𣦸. The Erya says: “The yi is the zi.” Guo's commentary says: “That is the catalpa [qiū].” The Mao Shi says: “Hazel, chestnut, yi, paulownia, catalpa, and lacquer; thereupon to replace zithers and lutes.” This means these six trees are all fit for making zithers and lutes. The Wenzidian shuo says: “梓 [zǐ] is the catalpa [zǐqiū].” It has the radical 木 and phonetic 辛 abbreviated; it is also written as 梓).
