The Kingdom of Bāmiyān; the Kingdom of Kapiśa. (The above two kingdoms are Brahminical. These thirty-four kingdoms were passed through by the Tripiṭaka Master along his route; all are Barbarian kingdoms, and their designations are likewise Barbarian languages, not Sanskrit. The characters now glossed for sound merely take their phonetic values to echo the Barbarian words, without seeking the literal meanings of the characters. The reason why the prefectures and commanderies east of the Great Desert are not discussed is because they lie within the territory of the Tang state, and each already has its own national scriptures. This record begins west of the Great Desert, describing barbarian lands whose human customs and products differ from this [realm], which is why it records them.)
