慘烈（上錯敢反方言云慘慼也說文毒也從心參聲下連哲反亦作冽）。

Bitterly cold (the upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 錯敢 [ts- + -am = tsam]. The Fangyan says: "慘 means distress." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Poisonous; composed of 心 with 參 as phonetic." The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie 連哲 [l- + -iɛt = liɛt]; also written 冽).
