Giant softshell turtles and softshell turtles (黿鼈, the first char. fanqie: 月袁; the Yueling says, 'In the mid-autumn month, one presents giant turtles and catches giant turtles.' The second char. fanqie: 鞭滅; the Mao Commentary on the Shijing says, 'Roast the turtle and slice the carp.' The Guoyu says, 'One must wait for turtles to grow before eating them.' The Shuowen jiezi says both are formed from 黽, with 元 and 敝 respectively as phonetics).
