Caltrops (蒺茨: the upper [character 蒺 is] qin-qi fan [jí]; the lower [character 茨 is] zi-zi fan [cí]. Guo [Pu]'s commentary on the Erya says: “The jici spreads across the ground in creepers with fine leaves, and its fruit has bundles of three-cornered thorns.” The Shuowen [jiezi] says that both characters are formed with 艸 ('grass'), with ji and ci both phonetic).
