Break and snap (挫拉: the upper [character 挫 is] zu-guo fan [cuò]. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the Kaogongji says: “Cuo means to break.” Jia Kui's commentary on the Guoyu says: “To break a point is called cuo.” The lower [character 拉 is] li-da fan [lā]. He Xiu's commentary on the Gongyang [zhuan] says: “La means to break; to crush.” The Shuowen [jiezi] says that both characters are formed with 扌 ('hand'), with zuo and li both phonetic).
