Glancing askance (眄睞: the upper [character 眄 is] mian-bian fan [miǎn]; the lower [character 睞 is] li-dai fan [lài]. The Guangya says: “Mian and lai both mean to look.” The Kaosheng says: “The eyes not being straight.” The characters in the Shuowen are both formed with 目 ('eye'), with gai and lai both phonetic. 丐 is pronounced mian-bian fan [miǎn]).
