閥閱（上煩發反考聲云閥閱表功業也史記云人臣有功五明其等曰閥積閱曰閱也文字典說曰閥閱者今門閥為高貴也二字並從門伐兌皆聲也）。

閥閱 (The first syllable has the fanqie 煩發 [fá]. The Kaosheng says: "閥閱 [fáyuè] manifests meritorious deeds." The Shiji says: "When subjects have merit, the five gradations are clearly marked: [the left gate-pillar recording merit] is called 閥 [fá], and the accumulation of inspected merits [on the right] is called 閱 [yuè]." The Wenzi dian说 says: "閥閱 refers to what is now called distinguished lineage (menfa) of high rank." Both characters take 門 [mén] as semantic, with 伐 [fá] and 兌 [duì] as their respective phonetics.)
