荼蓼（上杜吳反下聯鳥反毛詩傳云蓼辛菜也爾雅云荼苦菜也古今正字荼蓼二字並從草余翏皆聲翏音力幼反論作蓼俗字也）。

Bitters and smartweed (荼蓼; the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 杜吳, and the second with the fanqie 聯鳥. The commentary to the Mao Classic of Poetry says: "蓼 is a pungent vegetable." The Erya says: "荼 is a bitter vegetable." The Gujin zhengzi says: "The two characters 荼 and 蓼 both take the radical 草, with 余 and 翏 both as phonetic"; 翏 is pronounced with the fanqie 力幼. In the Lun it is written as 蓼, which is a vulgar character).
