皐繇（上音高下音姚孔注尚書云皐繇舜帝臣也說文皐字從白[(犀-尸)-牛+十]聲也[(犀-尸)-牛+十]音淊尚書作咎古字也繇字作陶音兆古人借用也從自非也）。

皐繇 (The upper [character] is pronounced gao [gāo]. The lower [character] is pronounced yao [yáo]. Kong's commentary to the Book of Documents says: "Gao Yao was a minister of Emperor Shun." The Shuowen says: "The character 皐 derives from 白 with [(犀-尸)-牛+十] as phonetic." [(犀-尸)-牛+十] is pronounced tao [tāo]. In the Book of Documents it is written as 咎, which is an ancient character. The character 繇 is written as 陶, pronounced zhao [zhào]; ancient people used it as a phonetic loan. Writing it with 自 is incorrect.)
