Altar-bundle (壇纂) (the first character is pronounced dan-dan fan; Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Liji says: "Heaping up earth forms an altar [tan], which is a place for sacrifices. Tan comes from the idea of wide openness [dada], bright and august." The second character is pronounced zang-suan fan, suan has the sound of suan [酸]; an examination of the ritual layout of the altar-bundle shows: at each time of holding a jiao sacrifice, on the four sides of the altar they erect wooden tallies and carve on the earth or thatch; as today when the people of Chu make a prayer, they bind cogon grass into a bundle, cut it short and thread it onto a pole, stick it upright in the ground, and arrange incense and wine to pray, leaving only after the sacrifice is complete. It does not carry the meaning of compiling [zuan] into a collection).
