酺醵 [drinking gatherings]: The first character is read with the fanqie bu + hu. The Shiji states: 'In the twenty-fifth year of the First Emperor, the empire had a great communal drinking party (pu) for five days.' Under Han law, if three or more persons gathered to drink without cause, they were fined four ounces of gold; on this occasion they were granted leave to gather and drink for five days. The second character is read with the fanqie qu + nüe. Zheng's commentary on the Liji states: 'Pooling money to drink wine.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Pu means the king's virtue spreading abroad, a great gathering for drinking wine, composed of the radical you (酉) and fu (甫) as phonetic. Ju means gathering to eat and drink; it is composed of the radical you (酉) and ju (豦) as phonetic.' It is also written as zuo (酢).
