揣摩 [Appraising and polishing / strategizing] (The upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 初累. The lower character is pronounced with the fanqie 麼波. Du [Yu]'s commentary on the Zuozhuan says: 'To measure high and low is called chuai.' Gu Yewang says: 'It means measuring and calculating each other.' Han Kangbo's commentary on the Zhouyi says: 'Mo [摩] means mutually rubbing together.' The Guiguzi has two chapters on Chuai and Mo. The Shuowen says: Both characters take 手 [hand] as semantic classifier, with abbreviated 瑞 and abbreviated 麼 as phonetics. The character mo is sometimes written as 攠 in character dictionaries).
