Examine thoroughly (研覈): [The first character is pronounced] *wu* + *jian* fan. The Boya says: 'To grind/examine (研) means to ponder with mature thought.' The Shuowen jiezi writes it as the character 研; character dictionaries write it as [研/木]. The second character is pronounced *xing* + *ge* fan. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'To scrutinize (覈) means to examine the actual facts. It is formed with [the semantic component] *xi* (西) and the phonetic component *jiao* (敫).'
