鼓檝(上姑五反動也說文從豈從[山/又]音討刀反集文從皮作皷誤也壴音朱樹反下子葉反毛詩傳檝行船具也又棹也亦作揖)。
Rowing the oars (鼓檝): The first character is pronounced *gu* + *wu* fan, meaning to move. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It is formed from 豈 and [山/又], pronounced *tao* + *dao* fan.' The Jiwen writing it with leather (皮) as 皷 is mistaken. The character 壴 is pronounced *zhu* + *shu* fan. The second character is pronounced *zi* + *ye* fan. The Mao commentary on the Book of Odes says: 'An oar (檝) is an implement for moving a boat.' It also means an oar (棹), and is also written as 揖.
