Gui and zhang jade sceptres (珪璋: the first character has the fanqie 桂 + 畦. The Rites of Zhou says: "The guī is a jade tablet; from the Son of Heaven down to the five ranks of feudal lords, each holds one to protect his person." The Baihu tong says: "Guī speaks of purity." The Shuowen jiezi says it takes doubled 土 and is an auspicious jade, round on top and square below; the ancient script writes it with 玉 as 珪, identical to the transmitted text. The second character has the fanqie 灼 + 陽. Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: "Half a guī is called a zhāng." The Baihu tong says: "Zhāng speaks of brilliance." The Shuowen jiezi takes 玉 as semantic classifier and 章 as phonetic component).
