拯溺（上蒸字上聲杜注左傳云拯猶救助也廣雅云收也說文作枡上舉也從手升聲下寧的反莊子云善浮者不溺廣雅云溺謂沈溺也文字典說云溺沒水中也從水弱聲）。

拯溺 (the first character is the rising tone of the character 蒸 [zhěng]). Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'Zhěng is like to save or assist.' The Guangya says: 'To gather.' The Shuowen writes it as 枡, meaning to lift upward; it takes 手 as radical and 升 as phonetic. The second character has the fanqie: 寧 + 的 [nì]. The Zhuangzi says: 'Those skilled in swimming do not drown.' The Guangya says: 'Nì refers to sinking and drowning.' The Wenzidian shuo says: 'Nì means being submerged in water.' It takes 水 as radical and 弱 as phonetic.
