研覈（上齧堅反博雅云研思慮熟也說文云研磨也從石幵聲幵音牽或從手作揅[(干*干)/皿]並古字也音訓並同下衡革反聲類覈覆也漢書云其審覈之務準古法也說文考實事也從西敫聲西音呼嫁反敫音擊）。

研覈 (To examine and verify): The first character is read fanqie *ni[è]-[ji]ān* [yán]. The *Boya* states: '研 (*yán*) means considering thoroughly.' The *Shuowen jiezi* states: '研 means to grind; it is classified under the radical *shí* (stone) with *jiān* (幵) phonetic.' 幵 is pronounced *qiān*. It is also written with the hand radical as 揅 or as [(干*干)/皿], which are ancient characters; their pronunciation and gloss are both the same. The second character is read fanqie *h[éng]-[g]é* [hé]. The *Shenglei* states: '覈 (*hé*) means to scrutinize.' The *Hanshu* states: 'Let them investigate and verify it, strictly following ancient models.' The *Shuowen jiezi* states: 'To examine actual facts; it is classified under the radical *yà* (西) with *jiào* (敫) phonetic.' 西 is read fanqie *h[ū]-[ji]à*; 敫 is pronounced *jī*.
