棘林 (Bramble forest): The first character is read fanqie *j[īn]-[l]ì* [jí]. Zheng's commentary on the *Zhouli* states: '棘 (*jí*) is selected because it is red and has external thorns.' The commentary on the *Mao Poetry* states: '棘 is the sour jujube.' The *Shuowen jiezi* states: '棘 resembles the jujube and grows in thickets; it is an associative compound composed of two parallel 朿 (thorns).'
