操筆 (Holding the brush): The first character is read fanqie *c[āng]-[d]āo* [cāo]. The *Shuowen jiezi* states: '操 (*cāo*) means to grasp and hold; it is classified under the radical *shǒu* (hand) with *zào* (喿) phonetic.' 喿 is pronounced *zào*. The second character is read fanqie *b[ēi]-[m]ì* [bǐ]. Guo's commentary on the *Erya* states: 'The people of Shu call the writing brush *bulü*.' The *Shiji* states: 'Meng Tian invented the writing brush.' The *Shuowen jiezi* states: 'It is classified under the radical *zhú* (bamboo) with *yù* (聿) phonetic.' Transmitted texts write it with the hair radical as 笔, which is incorrect. 恬 is read fanqie *di[é]-[ji]ān*.
