蜎蜚 [wriggling and flying creatures]: [The first character is pronounced with the] fanqie 一泉 (yuān). The Zilin says: "It is the appearance of insects; it means moving." It is also written 蠉. The ancient script form 翾 has the fanqie 呼泉 (xuān); it is the appearance of flying. In ancient books, the second character "to fly" (飛) is always written 蜚, with the fanqie 甫韋 (fēi). 蜚 means flying up into the air. Checking this, the commentary to the Book of Han says: "In the first month, sparrows larger than turtledoves and of five colours flew (蜚) past; after the second month, they flew (蜚) past Chiyang"; this is it.
