Shaowu (韶武; cháng-zhāo fan [sháo]. Gu Yewang says: 'Sháo is the name of Shun's music. Therefore the Rites of Zhou speaks of dancing the Great Shao. Zheng's commentary says: Sháo means continuing, meaning that Shun was able to continue the virtue of Yao. The Shuowen jiezi says: Derived from yīn 音 [sound] with zhào 召 as phonetic.' The second character wǔ 武 refers to the military dance, meaning that the military dance is the music of kings. The Gujin zhengzi says: 'Wǔ means putting down misfortune and turmoil, awing and subduing the insubordinate, and laying down arms; hence stopping spears (zhǐ gē 止戈) forms the character wǔ 武.').
