臨淄（上音林鄭注周禮云以尊就卑曰臨賈注國語云臨治也方言臨照也說文臨監也從臥品聲下滓師反淄州也九州分在青州之地也杜注左傳云淄水名也出泰山梁父西北入汶文字典說從水甾聲甾音同上也）。

Linzi (臨淄: the first character is pronounced 林 [lín]. Zheng's commentary on the Rites of Zhou says: 'Approaching the lowly from an exalted position is called 臨.' Jia's commentary on the Guoyu says: '臨 means to govern.' The Fangyan says: '臨 means to illuminate.' The Shuowen says: '臨 means to oversee. It takes 臥 and 品 as phonetic.' The second character is pronounced 滓 [zǐ] + 師 [shī] fanqie. It refers to Zizhou, situated in the territory of Qingzhou among the Nine Provinces. Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'Zi is the name of a river; it originates at Mount Liangfu in Mount Tai and flows northwest into the Wen River.' The Wenzi dianshuo says: 'It takes 水 as semantic classifier and 甾 as phonetic,' 甾 having the same sound as above).
