崤函 (the Xiaohan passes: the first character is a fanqie of 効 and 交 [xiáo]; Kong's commentary to the Shangshu states: '崤 is a strategic territory.' Du Yu's commentary to the Zuozhuan states: 'Xiaohan lies west of Mianchi County.' The Shuowen analyzes it as semantic 山 and phonetic 肴. The second character is pronounced hán; Ban Gu's Xidu fu states: 'To the left it relies on the defile of Hangu and the two Xiao mountains.' The Shuowen analyzes it as semantic 弓 and phonetic 曰, with 弓 pronounced as a fanqie of 呵 and 感; the Kaosheng states: '函 is the name of a pass').
