僧懾憚（上占葉反鄭注禮記云懾恐懼也說文從心聶聲下壇旦反鄭玄箋毛詩云憚畏也廣雅云驚也說文云忌惡也從心單聲也）。

僧懾憚 (the monks were terrified and intimidated: the first character is a fanqie of 占 and 葉 [shè]; Zheng's commentary to the Liji states: '懾 means terrified.' The Shuowen analyzes it as semantic 心 and phonetic 聶. The second character is a fanqie of 壇 and 旦 [dàn]; Zheng Xuan's commentary to the Maoshi states: '憚 means fearing.' The Guangya states: 'It means alarmed.' The Shuowen states: 'It means detesting and fearing;' it has semantic 心 and phonetic 單).
