Ancestors and father's shrine (祖禰: the upper character has the fanqie zu-gu [zu]. The Erya says: 'Zu means beginning.' Gu Yewang says: 'Zu means ancestor; above.' The Guangya says: 'Root; distant.' The Shuowen says: 'A zu is an ancestral founder's shrine; it is derived from "altar" [示] and phonetic qie [且].' The lower character has the fanqie ni-di [ni]. In ancient script it was written as 禰; nowadays the vulgar form writes it under the "grass" radical [艸] in clerical script as 檷. The Zhouli says: 'The shrine for one's father.' The Wenzidian shuo says: 'It is derived from "altar" [示] and phonetic er [爾]; a mutually defining character [zhuānzhù].').
