嗚咽（上屋孤反考聲云悲歎之聲字書亦從欠作歍下煙結反字書考聲亦從壹作噎聲類云不平聲也亦氣逆也）。

嗚咽 [sobbing]: The first character is read with the fanqie wu + gu (wū). The Kaosheng says: 'The sound of sorrowful sighing.' Character dictionaries also write it with the radical 'yawn' (欠) as 歍. The second character is read with the fanqie yan + jie (yè). The character dictionaries and Kaosheng also write it with yī (壹) as 噎. The Shenglei says: 'An uneven, troubled sound; also choked breath.'
