伉儷（上康浪反左傳云不能庇其伉儷杜預注左傳云伉敵也下黎帝反埤蒼云儷猶伴也廣雅云侶也古今正字伉儷二字並從人亢麗亦聲也）。

Spouse (伉儷: the first character is fanqie kang + lang [kàng]. The Zuozhuan says: "Unable to protect his spouse." Du Yu's commentary on the Zuozhuan says: "Kang (伉) means equal match." The second character is fanqie li + di [lì]. The Picang says: "Li (儷) is like companion." The Guangya says: "Partner." The Gujin zhengzi says: "The two characters kànglì (伉儷) are both formed from [the radical] 人 (person), with 亢 and 麗 as phonetic").
