Tough hide (皮鞕) (the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 牙更 [yá + gèng -> yìng]; the Gujin zhengzi properly gives it with the leather radical (革) and 更 phonetic, meaning hard and sturdy; the Wenzidian shuo gives the same meaning; the Kaosheng also writes it with the stone radical (石) as 硬, which is the character commonly used today; the transmission text writes it with 卭 as 䩕, pronounced 𭥦, but dictionaries state that 䩕 is a type of boot, which is not the original meaning and is not adopted here).
