Deep shallow pool (深淀) (the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 田練 [tián + liàn -> diàn]; Zuo Taichong's 'Rhapsody on the Capital of Wei' mentions 'the pool where carps are held in the hand'; Lü Yanji's commentary says: '淀 is also the name of a body of water, west of Yimu County in Hejian; a 淀 is like a deep pool yet shallow'; 淵 is pronounced with the fanqie 烏玄 [wū + xuán -> yuān]; the Gujin zhengzi gives the same meaning, composed of the water radical (水) with 定 phonetic).
