Caterpillar (螟蛉; the upper character is m[ì] + [p]íng fanqie; the lower character is l[ì] + [t]íng fanqie. The Erya states: '螟蛉 (mínglíng) is the mulberry insect.' Guo states: 'The mulberry spanworm; also called the guarding female.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Both characters have the radical 虫 (insect) and the phonetics 冥 and 令.' It is also written as 𧕅).
