氓隷（上麥耕反毛詩傳云氓民也鄭注周禮云氓猶懞懞無知之貌也劉注孟子云遠郊之界稱氓說文從亡民聲集本作泯恐誤）。

Commoners and bondsmen (氓隷; the upper character is m[ài] + [g]ēng fanqie. The Mao Commentary on the Classic of Poetry states: '氓 (máng) means common people.' Zheng's Commentary on the Rites of Zhou states: '氓 is like being ignorant and untutored.' Liu's Commentary on Mengzi states: 'Those living in the distant outer suburbs are called máng.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'It has the radical 亡 and the phonetic 民.' The collected editions write it as 泯, which is likely an error).
