黿鼉 [giant softshell turtle and alligator] (The upper character is pronounced with the fanqie yuǎn + yuán; the lower is pronounced with the fanqie dù + hé. The Shuowen says: "A yuán is a large softshell turtle. It takes the reptile (mǐn) radical and yuán as phonetic." The Shanhaijing says: "The Yangtze River produces alligators (tuó)." Guo Pu says: "Resembles a lizard; large ones are long, have patterned scales, and their hides can be made into drums." The Shuowen says: "An aquatic reptile." The rest of its meaning is the same as Guo's: "It takes the reptile (mǐn) radical and dān as phonetic." The collected edition originally wrote 魭䰿, which are vulgar characters. Biē [turtle] is pronounced with the fanqie bēi + miè; mǐn is pronounced with the fanqie méng + gěng.)
