Turn into clams 為蛤 (fanqie: 甘合 [gé]). The Liji says: 'In late autumn, sparrows enter the great waters and become clams.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'There are three kinds of ge (clam), all produced in the sea. The haige (sea clam) is what a hundred-year-old swallow transforms into; another kind is the puluo, which an old bat transforms into; the geli is what a thousand-year-old quail transforms into.' It takes 虫 ('insect/creature') as semantic and 合 as phonetic. The edition under collation says pheasants transform into clams, which is an erroneous allusion.
