Binding cord (First syllable 百肓 fanqie [bēng]; the Kaosheng says: 'To wind and bind.' The Shuowen says: 'Analyzed as from 糸 [silk] with 并 phonetic.' Second syllable 食蠅 fanqie [shéng]; Song Zhong's commentary on the Shiben says: 'A marking line is that by which straightness is obtained.' The Shuowen says: 'Analyzed as from 糸 [silk] with an abbreviated 蠅 phonetic.' The collected edition writes it as 繩, a vulgar variant).
