Low-lying and cramped (湫[阿-可+((三*三)/皿)]: the first [character is pronounced] jiao + xiao fan; the Kaosheng says that jiu (湫) means low ground that is cramped; Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says that jiu means low; the second is e + jie fan; Gu Yewang says that ai (隘) is like narrow and compressed; the Shuowen jiezi says that jiu is composed of 'water' [水] with qiu [秋] phonetic, and ai is composed of 'mound' [𨸏] with yi [益] phonetic).
