Standard marker (標式: [first character pronounced] bi-yao fan [biāo]. The Jixun says: "To raise; to write; to write on a wooden tablet as a placard." The Shuowen says: "Wood." It takes mù [wood] as radical and piào, pī-yáo fan, as phonetic. It is also written with jīn [cloth] as 幖. The lower character is pronounced shāng-yì fan [shì]. The Shuowen says: "Model; to use." It takes gōng [work] and yì, yíng-jí fan, as phonetic).
