[刀/肉/火]鼈 (The upper character is the standard form of the character 魚 ('fish'). The Shuowen jiezi says it is formed from 刀 as a pictograph; 火 represents the fish's tail. The fish's tail resembles a swallow's tail and accidentally looks like the character 火, but it is not formed from the character 火 ('fire'). The lower character is pronounced bie1 [bian-mie fan]. The Kaosheng says: 'An aquatic creature.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'An aquatic shelled creature; formed from 黽 (pronounced meng3) with 敝 as phonetic.' In the sūtra it is written as 鱉 with 'fish' (魚), which is an incorrect vulgar character. The sound of 敝 is the same as the above).
