Clever and shrewd (聡黠: the first character has the fanqie c- + [h]ong [=cōng]; the Shangshu says: 'Hearing is called cōng; it must be keen and penetrating'; it also says: 'Hearing produces counsel; what is counseled is sure to succeed'; in the sūtra it is written with 'window' [囪] as 聡, which is a vulgar character. The second character has the fanqie x- + [b]a [=xiá]; the Kaosheng says: 'Xiá (黠) means sharp-witted'; the Fangyan says: 'Between Jin and Wei, wisdom is called xiá'; the Shuowen says it is formed with 'black' [黑] and jí [吉] as phonetic).
