To weigh and evaluate (稱稱; the first character is [pronounced with the] fanqie chǐ + [zh]èng. The second character is [pronounced with the] fanqie chǐ + [zh]ēng. The first character is in the falling tone, and the second character is in the level tone. The Guangya says: “Chēng means to measure.” The Shuowen says: “It means to balance. It takes hé ‘grain’ as semantic classifier and chēng as phonetic.” The scripture writes it as 秤, which is a vulgar character).
