Hàndàn 菡𧂄 (The upper character is fanqie 含紺 [hàn]. The lower character is fanqie 談濫 [dàn]. The Erya says: 'Hàndàn 菡𧂄 refers to the open lotus flower'. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'When the flower has not yet opened, it is called fúróng 芙蓉; when it has already opened, it is called hàndàn 菡𧂄. Both characters have radical cǎo 草, and hán 函 and yán 閻 are both phonetic'. In sūtra texts, it is mostly written as 菡萏, which is incorrect and misses the mark by far).
